When Getting Dentures in Peterborough, Can They Be Supported by Implants?

Looking into getting dentures in Peterborough can be a complicated process, because there are many kinds of dentures and ways of attaching them to the mouth.  A lot of people don’t like the idea of having to rely on glues or suction to hold their dentures in place and would prefer to find a more reliable way to attach them.

The good news is that even if someone is missing most or all their original teeth, there is still an alternative when using dentures:  implant-supported dentures.  While there can be specific situations where implant-supported dentures cannot be used, in general, it’s a technique which can be used in many cases.

Understanding Dentures in Peterborough:  Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are exactly what they sound like.  Assuming there is still enough available bone beneath the gum line, dentist implants 2 to 5 teeth, which are then used as attachment points for the dentures.  This creates a set of dentures which are extremely stable and unlikely to come loose under normal conditions.

There are two kinds of implant-supported dentures which might be used:

  1. Bar-Retained Dentures

This uses a single thin bar which is attached to the implanted teeth, and runs in a curve around the upper or lower side of your mouth.  The dentures then attach to this bar.  Generally, bar-retained dentures are a bit easier to attach and remove, but the bar takes some getting used to.

  1. BaLl-Retained Dentures

For these, each implant has its own small ball which fits into a corresponding socket in the dentures.  In other words, the dentures attach directly to the implanted teeth, rather than to a bar or another object.  Newer, more experimental, variations on bail-retained dentures also exist which use magnets rather than ball-in-socket attachments.

Are Implant-Supported Dentures Permanent?

No!  This is an important distinction.  Implant-supported dentures are like regular dentures in that they still need to be removed regularly for cleaning, and a person should not sleep with them in place.

The purpose of the implant supports is simply to make the dentures more reliable.  However, if a patient really wants to avoid taking their dentures in and out, there are sometimes other alternatives such as using implant-attached bridges to create more permanent options.

How Long Do Implant-Supported Dentures Take?

For many, this is the big down side – it’s not a short process.  The implants will have to be put in place first, involving oral surgery and several months’ recovery before the final denture plate can be made and fit into place.  Depending on how many implants are required to support the denture, and whether work needs to be done reinforcing the jawbone, the entire process can take between 6-12 months.
